The instinct of death is transformed into an instinct of destruction only when it is directed to objects. The living being retains its own life by destroying someone else’s. But some part of the death instinct remains to act within a living organism. Keywords: psychology, life, death, culture, symbol, immortality, transcendence, therapy, religion, suffering.
